QB Film Room’s 2022 NFL Draft Scouting report, malik willis (Liberty)

Malik Willis 6’0” ⅜ 220, Liberty

Overview
Willis began his career at Auburn but the staff elected to start Bo Nix. Willis transferred to
Liberty & watched his college career blossom. In two seasons at Liberty, Willis threw for over
5,100 yards with 47 touchdowns & 18 interceptions while completing 62% of his throws in a
shotgun heavy system. On the ground, Willis rushed for 1,800 yards & a whopping 27
touchdowns. A legitimate dual threat quarterback entering the NFL.

Tape Analysis (Willis)
An electric playmaker at the position with a snap release of the football. Willis’ film is littered with
high end arm talent throws all over the field. Shows the ability to get rid of the football at a
moment’s notice with very good velocity & pace. Is comfortable throwing receivers open with
touch down the field. Accuracy is for most part good but there are times where his ball
placement can be off. Did not necessarily step his game up in the biggest of moments. Missed
reads & throws at times in these big moment situations. Natural off script runner with the ability
to take off and run with elite instincts & speed/get up unlike we have seen since Lamar Jackson
coming into the league in 2018. Willis is built like a truck with tremendous lower & upper body
strength. May have the strongest arm in the class. Mechanics can break down under duress,
resulting in ball placement issues & Willis dropping his eyes to look to run. Is not experienced
working from the pocket consistently as a passer, struggles in this regard coming into the NFL.
Issues with being precise with ball placement on the move at times. Does not have the same
type of pocket presence that Lamar Jackson did coming into the NFL. Mechanics can get
sloppy & Willis is not a true natural anticipation passer between the hashes with timing like a
Corral or a Strong. He can get himself into trouble when he misses these split second
opportunities & then moves by default.

Projection (Willis)
Brings with him the most enticing skill-set in the entire class of quarterbacks but also is
underdeveloped in a few critical areas (pocket presence, anticipation, working through
progressions & overall mechanics) Look for Willis to be selected in Round 1 but he may slide to
the teens for a team like Pittsburgh or Philadelphia.
